5 [Reasons] Excuses that Keep Us from Being an Entrepreneur

You work hard during 40 or more hours per week; you deliver your highest quality in everything you do. However, you don’t feel appreciated, you don’t receive the promotions you think you deserve, and in the worst case, you are deemed disposable, your job is terminated and your time an effort spent in the company is a total waste.

Or maybe you’re still in a job, but the conditions and the stress you’re exposed to are taking a huge toll on your personal life.

It’s not your fault. This is just the result of system that was part of your upbringing, which taught you that you are supposed to walk a straight and pre-defined path: go to school, get good grades, don’t deviate from what the book says and find a job and keep it for the next 30(?) years and then retire and enjoy life.

But… where are the jobs? Where is the security? Where is the American Dream? Is life fully enjoyable after 60 or 70?

The conditioning of the educational system puts most of us at odds in these changing times, where all the promises from the past have evaporated like an ice cube hitting a red-hot surface. Industries and markets are changing faster than the school curricula; it’s impossible for them to keep up.

That’s why… now it’s time for you to start “deviating” from what the traditional books say. And for that it’s necessary to get rid of the next five reasons excuses that keep you from being an entrepreneur:

Employee Mindset

“Be creative, but don’t be weird, don’t be different”. We have been conditioned to bow our heads and just follow instructions. That’s considered normal… to follow the crowd, to wait for things to happen, to have someone else dictate your fate. But entrepreneurship requires to unlearn this way of thinking and rewire your mind, so you don’t keep waiting for things to happen, for the economy to bounce back, or for the jobs to come back. The job of your dreams exists only in your head, which means you need to create it. You are capable of great things, but it’s only up to you to decide to switch from a victim mentality to a winner mentality.

Beware, the road to success is filled with challenges, but the new mindset will help you conquer any obstacles and to keep grinding until you reap the fruits of your efforts without depending on employment (or unemployment).

Lack of Time

Life gets busy, and the workplace keeps demanding more and more from us. Today it is easy to check your email from your phone, even from your wristwatch, which triggers the need of getting online to address the potential request that could be the key to keep your job. Again, it’s not your fault. It’s just too much pressure. And at this point it becomes even more critical to consider starting an online business.

“What?” – you say. “I’m burning the midnight oil as it is!”

One thing is certain: the demand for your time will not decrease when it comes to an employment. It will keep growing. And while becoming an entrepreneur and keeping a job seems like trying to face a tsunami, the advantage is that once you get started, it becomes easier, and the time spent in growing your business will be less over time, and once you are comfortable with the income you are achieving, you can fire your boss and hire yourself full time. Yes, the time required to get started is considerable, but the prize is… well… priceless!

I don’t know where to begin!

That’s why you’re here! It’s the same process for a baby to start walking. He has no idea what he’s doing, but getting started, while difficult in the beginning, it becomes easier after some time. So, start with baby steps. Do basic research, consume free online content, read books about entrepreneurship, follow blogs, podcasts, subscribe to newsletters to receive information.

After you use the basic information to decide if this is path you want to follow, decide on a mentor that can guide you on your journey. Find a person that has implemented a successful business online and be coachable. Yes, ask a lot of questions, but also trust the process. Remember, hard work and patience will always lead to good results!

I don’t have money to get started

A lot of us have been there, no surprise. After all, you would not be reading this if you were already wealthy. But the key difference between winners and losers is not having resources (money), but instead being resourceful. This includes coming up with creative ways to access financial resources to get the ball rolling. It’s always difficult to reach out to family or friends to come up with an investment, but that’s what being an entrepreneur sometimes mean, to convince others that our business plan is solid and that will be successful. Other resources can be used, like credit cards, loans or savings. Here you need to assess your risk and be mindful that your business needs to start producing results to cover the initial money you used. This puts more pressure on you, but the difference is that the end result will be fulfilling and totally worth it!

Remember, if you’re resourceful, you will make it happen!

I’m not sure if I can succeed, it’s too risky

Same as life. Same as your job. Same as every time you drive your car. Risk is part of any business. Without risk there’s no merit because anybody could do it. Any known entrepreneur will validate this… that risk is always an inherent component of any enterprise.

Many businesses will fail. But the main reason for failure is the lack of adaptability and resiliency to keep going while others stop, to keep learning while others thing that there’s nothing more to learn, to look at the business as a living organism that produces value, as opposed to think of it as a cash machine.

In the digital era we don’t need to produce physical products. We live in times where knowledge is the new currency. It’s the most valuable asset that a person can produce. And it’s right there, between your ears. Your brain contains knowledge that would allow you to write thousands of books. And that’s how you succeed.

School Degree Vs Life Degree

I love education. I believe that small learning acts, like reading, make us smarter every day.

I used to be a straight A student in Elementary and Junior High, but in High School I started to change; I noticed that I was missing out in some aspects of life where I could make a difference and still be good student.

Dedicating time to other activities had an impact my grades, but such experiences helped me see the world differently. I noticed that education at school is limited, because students normally make sure to read or learn enough to hit the mark, but life teaches in quite different ways. There are no limits, no boundaries, no boxes. It’s a green field for everyone who is trying to live life in his own terms.

While school education stops, life goes on. And then it becomes a matter of personal attitude, initiative, creativity and consistency.

I have no doubt that the foundation of formal education is needed to catapult a person into new levels of knowledge, but to be successful in today’s world there is a lot of knowledge that schools simply don’t provide. Is this part of a big plan to keep a lot of people with limited access to critical knowledge? I don’t know. However, I do know that today we can harness knowledge in ways that were almost impossible some years ago.

The fundamental issue I see is that the internet has created two types of players: the consumers and the creators. The ones who spend a lot of time watching, and those who deliver content geared towards value creation and business ventures.

Education is key to avoid being ignorant, but transforming the ideas and concepts obtained during formal education is best accomplished when it’s combined with personal life experiences, with the exclusive approach of the creator, without canned answers or proposals, but with an attitude of guidance and servant leadership to enhance the lives of others, to make an impact in those who put their trust in them.

I consume online content, but I also decided to create value, to express my ideas to inspire others the way I have been inspired by many people. I’ve been guided and I also help others become successful. I learned this thanks to the School of Life.

Success is not measure by what we accomplish in life, but what we help others accomplish in theirs.

Creator or Consumer? You decide…

Three key elements to become successful

We all want to be successful. It’s totally normal because we all want to be better, regardless of our current circumstances. We all wish to be in a better situation.

Here are three key elements that we must focus on to become successful. They are education, relationships and coaching.

Education helps us to change our mindset, because when we learn we become smarter. When we read a book, when taking a course online or attending a class, we will generate more ideas. If we have a trade or ability that we have practiced for years, we can learn to turn that ability into a business that can give us a tremendous advantage over those who decide to do other non-productive things.

Now, let’s not forget that there will always be someone smarter than us, but there will also be someone who learn from you and will benefit from your experience. We don’t need to be the greatest expert in each topic or trade to create value towards other people. The important thing is to find those who have the same goal and interests that you have.

For example, if you know how to cultivate corn, I bet you can find a lot of people interested in that as well. On the other hand, there will be a lot of people who don’t care about that. Now, those who are interested in this topic will want to learn from you and to hear your experiences about corn crops. And just as they are learning from you, you need to keep learning from others. You need to stay in that continuous improvement cycle because we never stop learning, regardless if we are 5 years old, or 20 or 50 or 90 years old. We must always be learning.

I remember a situation where a very old man who loves to play the guitar was asked why he kept practicing 4 to 5 hours every day, when he was very proficient at playing that instrument. Now, he wasn’t born with that ability. He just put the time to practice and followed his passion. His answer to the question on why he kept practicing so much was: “I think I’m making progress”.

So, it doesn’t matter in what part of our lives we are, we always need to be getting better and better. And education is a powerful tool to become better every day.

The second component is relationships. The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. We become the average of the five people we hang out with. Our relationships can make us better or worse, because if we hang out with people with a negative mindset we will get infected by that. On the contrary, if we follow people or groups with a hard-working and positive mentality, we will raise to their level and will get better. If we try to make it alone, we might have some level of success, but the long lasting and sustainable entrepreneurship requires that we flock together with those of our same feathers. The goals will be similar, and the synergies and mutual support will deliver tremendous results.

Finally, the third key element in our journey towards success is to have a mentor or coach or guide, call it whatever you want. A coach is someone that helps us to figure out how to put together the pieces that will result in a business by using his experience. This accelerates the process and can give you the confidence that you have been lacking to make hard decisions. By following in the footsteps of a proven entrepreneur, your odds to be successful increase significantly. A lot of people who have achieved success always refer to someone else who helped them get clarity and support them in ways that were critical in their lives.

There you have them, the three key elements to achieve great success. First, education and continuous learning. Second, relationships, seeking to hang out with people with a learning and improvement mindset to help each other and to continue learning. And finally, never underestimate the power of having a mentor or coach who can help you accomplish your goals faster and with better results.

That’s all I have today my friend. I hope this was helpful and I wish you the best of success in all your projects.
Hasta la vista!

5 Reasons Why You Should Start a Side Hustle

A lot of us hesitate when it comes to start a business on the side. The fear to fail, to not make money or to lose money always get in the way. Our inner 6-year old child is always telling us that we’re not enough, that we don’t have what it takes to be successful, or that other were born talented… WRONG!

In today’s world we cannot apply the mindset of those who lived in before us. With all due respect to our parents and grandparents, the times we live in are way too different from theirs, and if they did not adapt to the new reality then we should think twice about following their advice to the letter. And that includes our teachers, mentors, friends, colleagues or acquaintances.

Technology has reshaped the way business is done. And learning by doing is the best formula to decide is we want to start a new business venture.

Here are the reasons why you should start a side hustle online:

#1 – It’s easy. It’s incredible how simple and fast is to start creating content online. Writing blogs, posting videos, creating digital courses… there’s a million things you can choose from to decide the nice you want to focus on. It’s literally a few clicks away.

#2 – It’s free. You don’t “need money to make money” online. You just need to understand that it will not happen overnight, but after some time while constantly creating value, you will reap the benefits of this, and then you’ll realize that your initial investment (if any), it was nothing compared to the new kind of life you have now.

#3 – You can learn. Doing by learning is great. I have learned things like trading forex and stock options, affiliate marketing, product arbitrage, and all that by giving myself the chance to try it. And even though sometimes I have list as a result of my investment, the learning experience and the connection I’ve made along the way have been invaluable. Those lessons I have learned cannot be taken away from me by anybody.

#4 – Learn about yourself. Sometimes we learn things about ourselves that have been there the entire time. This can happen when we connect with other people who are pursuing goals that are like ours. Their input is a great way to validate our potential and let it transform into actions that can help us get going. Remember, to avoid falling from the bicycle we must keep moving forward.

#5 – Find your target market. If you’re at this stage, that means you’re sold on the idea of doing business online. Here you use all the learnings and the feedback from those who are consuming your content to find your ultimate customer… those who will be interested in products that you recommend or your own product.

So, there’s pretty much no investment when it comes to learning online business models.

It’s up to you to take action.

Let me know if you need any help. I’d appreciate connecting with you to increase my network and learn how I can create more value to you.

Have a marvilloso día!

Education for entrepreneurs

“Any person can produce a lot of ideas in a day, there’s no merit on that. Investing time and effort to transform one idea into something meaningful is what makes the difference between average and awesome!”

Learning from other bright minds is a double benefit for those who decide to invest in their own education. It provides an outside approach to problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration that will always result in new knowledge and ideas that fuel the innovative brain with a cornucopia of possibilities. Also, it helps to learn not only from their successes, but also from the failures, which can prevent the wanna-be entrepreneur from making the same mistakes.

A great resource at the perfect time in Cincinnati is the creation of the local chapter of the Founders Institute, The World’s Premier Idea-Stage Accelerator and Startup Launch Program, with the mission to “Globalize Silicon Valley” and help promising entrepreneurs launch companies that create one million new startup jobs.

The brain power found within this organization is truly amazing, and the expectation for the Queen City’s new FI alumni is really interesting and promising.

The deadline for application is August 7 for the current year.

Do you think you have great ideas? Find out if one of them is worth one million dollars!

I signed up for the program and will be sharing my experience as I become a better entrepreneur.
